Letter: Whoever leads needs compassion

Many thanks for running Thomas Friedman's column on Oct. 2, "Another 9/11 president is not what America needs."
As usual, Mr. Friedman is right on the number regarding what direction the United States should head in next year's election. Our nation used to represent the moral compass of the world, until 9/11 - the quintessential example of change being, as Mr. Friedman points out, Guantanamo.
To close that base in Cuba and establish a field hospital for poor Cubans, as Mr. Friedman suggests, is the kind of insightful altruism of which few politicians seem capable, but such a person would be exactly the kind of presidential candidate the nation needs and the one who deserves our votes come November '08.
