Letter: Bars find ways to flout smoke ban
Friday, Oct. 5, 2007 | 7:28 a.m.
Returning to our home in Las Vegas after an extended trip, my husband and I stopped at a local bar/restaurant. We were looking forward to conversing over a drink and playing some video poker without having to breathe the toxic fumes of those who choose to smoke.
But we left when we discovered that taverns have found a simple way to circumvent the law and annihilate the rights of the voting public.
The restaurant was indeed walled off from the bar area, keeping food service separate. However, the law can apparently be bypassed if the waitress serves food in the bar in to-go containers. By doing so, the bar is not officially "serving" food. It is selling it to go. This simple exchange of Styrofoam for a plate seems to effectively negate what we (the majority) worked for and earned.
It's sickening when we all know the intent of the smoking ban was to keep cigarette smoke from the greater masses who choose not to poison ourselves.
How can the outvoted simply wield a to-go container and blatantly snub the law and override the will and the votes of the people?
