Letter: Candidates sidestep immigration issues
Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007 | 7:04 a.m.
We are getting perilously close to choosing our candidates for the presidency of the United States. Illegal immigration is of extreme importance for the future of the United States and it is being studiously ignored by nearly all the candidates. It is about time this question comes up in the "debates" and we know exactly who plans to do something about it and who likes things just as they are. It is obvious that both parties are leery of losing one Hispanic vote, but the time has come to put the welfare of our country first.
About 80 percent of our citizens are adamantly against amnesty and want to have the existing laws enforced. There is just no reason that these people who have broken the law to come here and are costing our taxpayers billions of dollars should have sanctuary cities. It is too bad that Mexico can't or won't take care of its people, but it is not incumbent on us to have what amounts to an open-door policy. Close the border, beef up the Border Patrol, get rid of the criminals and gang members, start fining the employers, check the Social Security numbers.
I will not vote for any candidate who has not made his or her views known, and I don't think I am the only one who feels this way.
