Letter: Trash hauler shouldn’t have it both ways

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's Nov. 21 editorial "What a smelly deal":
I've been following the issue of Republic Services' asking for a rate hike to finish cleaning up the Sunrise Landfill. The company's attitude strongly smacks of blackmail.
Why doesn't the Clark County Commission suggest that if the company wants a rate hike, other portions of the contract are up for renegotiation, specifically the length of time for which Republic has a monopoly in Clark County?
Maybe we should trade the rate hike for a shortening of the duration of the contract to 2009 or so, and the County Commission can start looking for someone else to provide trash collection services. This is what the free enterprise system is all about.
