THE ELEVATOR

Who's going to the penthouse in local sports and beyond - and who's getting the shaft:

GOING UP

Sweet science hype

It started Sunday in the first of four HBO behind-the-scenes documentaries showing Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather preparing for their Dec. 8 clash at the MGM Grand.

Bump, set ...

The 21-5 UNLV women's volleyball team starts the Mountain West Conference tournament Thursday against Wyoming at Cox Pavilion. The Rebels have never played in a tournament title match. The finale is Saturday.

Fore!

Get accustomed to pronouncing UNLV freshman golfer Therese Koelbaek's name. The 5-foot-8 Dane won a national Golfweek magazine honor after shooting a final-day 69 to win a tournament in Richmond, Calif. Oh, and it's pronounced ko-ELL-beck.

GOING DOWN

Apple or cherry?

Nineteen turnovers, which UNLV committed Saturday at San Diego, must have made hoops coach Lon Kruger grimace. The Rebels won by double digits and it's only November, but still ...

Failed revolution

New England lost in the Major League Soccer Cup for the fourth time in six seasons Sunday when Houston repeated as champion. Just call the Revolution the latter-day Buffalo Bills.

UNLV football

It's 123rd in this week's Sagarin computer rankings, behind such powers as the Citadel, Elon and Furman. In fact, 21 programs from the former Division I-AA are rated higher than the 2-9 Rebels.
