Letter: Smokers aren’t the only litterbugs

Regarding Robert Kaye's Nov. 6 letter, "Smokers' littering is disgusting, neglectful": Why doesn't he blame the fall of Rome, the Great Depression, Katrina, Sept. 11 and all the other problems in the world on smokers?
I would like to point him to the family litterbugs who dump their kids' soiled diapers in the middle of parking lots and the people who throw fast-food bags and drink containers from their cars and all around the streets, and how about all of the people who litter by dumping their garbage on vacant lots? How about the litterbugs who put all of those beer bottles and soda cans next to their car on the ground as they leave shopping centers?
Yes, Mr. Kaye, there are littering laws here and all over the country, and I'm sure when law enforcement officers see someone littering they do their duty and issue citations. But please don't blame all of the problems on smokers.
Many people with specific agendas or dislikes try to force their opinions and views on the masses, and that's wrong. If litter in general really offends people, the solution is to volunteer and pick it up from the streets - or are those same people going to pick up only cigarette butts and leave the rest of the litter?
