FLASHPOINT for Nov 08, 2007
Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007 | 6:51 a.m.
Whatever else happened at the Summit to Save the State - and the only real news was just how big the deficit might be at a third of a billion dollars - what didn't happen was consensus. Oh, there was the palaver about working together and everyone putting his insular agenda aside for the greater good of everyone in the great state of Nevada. I got nauseated just writing that, so imagine what it was like to be there. But as Gov. Jim Gibbons waved off entreaties to consider new revenue to stabilize the budget roller coaster, he also made the cogent point that the economy's robustness cannot be guaranteed, no matter the tax system. True. But it can be spread out, and it's about time these local government leaders started speaking out. If not them, who?
