Letter: Cleaner air leads to cleaner bill of health

Monday, Nov. 5, 2007 | 7:18 a.m.

Again, Congress is working on another bill for children's health insurance. Even though it is likely to pass through Congress, it again faces President Bush's veto just as he did recently to a similar bill.

As a parent I find this ridiculous, but I am also concerned that we are failing to focus our attention on keeping our children healthy so they don't need treatment in the first place. Clean air is vital so children do not get asthma and other health problems, yet we have proposals for three new coal-fired power plants in Nevada - areas that currently have minimal air pollution and high potential for renewable energy.

Just as we state that children are the future, our energy policy needs to consider the future. Thankfully, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada is doing just that and deserves credit. The future is in our hands today, it's our choice - clean or dirty air. The choice is clear.
