Letter: An alternate method for raising money

Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007 | 1:46 a.m.

So, some Nevadans think we need to raise taxes to bolster the state's revenue. Well, I have an idea that will help those coffers and does not require a rise in the tax rate: Require everyone who lives and works in the state to possess a Nevada driver's license or state-issued ID within 30 days of moving here.

I realize people are already supposed to change their licenses within 30 days, but the vast majority do not. I work at a locals casino in the cashier's cage and cash payroll checks by the dozens every week for people who present IDs from foreign countries (Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras are most prevalent) and people with driver's licenses from every state who have moved here but whose licenses do not expire for two to 20 years, and who refuse to get Nevada licenses until theirs expires.

I propose making it a requirement of businesses that all employees be in possession of a Nevada license or ID within 30 days of employment or be terminated. The state will acquire a large influx of cash and no tax increase will be needed.
