LOOKING IN ON: CITY HALL
Prostitution and taxpayer dollars for a strip club sign.
Jeff Simpson on an implosion, an impending strike and silly TV ads
Because I watched a good Clint Eastwood movie last week, I'll call those changes the good, the bad and the ugly.
Letter: Lawyer's take on J-1 doctors is offensive
Michael Stein, Dr. Krishnan's attorney, is quoted as saying that J-1 doctors are lucky to be paid good money in the United States instead of working in their home countries, "where they would probably get a bowl of rice for their services."
Editorial: A new tone in Congress
A hearing on Yucca Mountain last week before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee was the first since Democrats gained control of Congress, and it truly showed what a difference an election can make.
WEEK IN REVIEW: WASHINGTON, D.C.
WASHINGTON - As you pass the Justice Department , with its enormous art deco doors shut securely for the night, it's hard to imagine the turmoil that has raged behind that stoic facade since the new Congress took over this year.
LOOKING IN ON: GAMING
Developer Triple Five, best known for its Mall of America near Minneapolis and the world's largest mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has plunked down $180 million for a piece of the Strip that was home to the historic La Concha Motel.
Quit the bluster, let's look at our needs, Raggio urges

Editorial: Chinese chemicals unchecked
The House Energy and Commerce Committee, which conducted a hearing on the issue Thursday, assigned a team of investigators to accompany FDA officials as they inspected chemical plants in China and India, where the numbers of companies making pharmaceutical ingredients have increased significantly.
Tax-resistant history leaves Nevada with fewer choices
While fretting over the state's fiscal health, Nevadans would do well to remember those quaint years, circa 1979, when the state was regularly flush with cash.
Letter: Cheney, Bush have overstepped bounds
This is indeed a precipitous statement. What happened to the Iraq war? Has a recess been declared there? Are the Iraqi people free? No, they are still captives as long as Americans occupy their territory.
The higher ed squeeze
A MOMENT CAPTURED
The political rally had the Cheyenne High School lunchroom bustling. The sound of chairs shifting on the floor melded with the dull roar of chatter as Sen. Barack Obama supporters filed in and found viewing spots for the night's rally.
Building wraps: Art or schlock ?
Along one stretch of the Strip, high-rise condos and hotels are rising from the drafting boards of some of the world's leading architects, catapulting Las Vegas toward cosmopolitan chic.
Editorial: Producing dropouts
The study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University defined a dropout factory as a school where no more than six of 10 freshmen make it to graduation. The study found 44 percent of Nevada's high schools fit that criterion.
Letter: An alternate method for raising money
I realize people are already supposed to change their licenses within 30 days, but the vast majority do not. I work at a locals casino in the cashier's cage and cash payroll checks by the dozens every week for people who present IDs from foreign countries (Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras are most prevalent) and people with driver's licenses from every state who have moved here but whose licenses do not expire for two to 20 years, and who refuse to get Nevada licenses until theirs expires.
Letter: J-1 abuses should not be portrayed as norm
However, he might have unwittingly created the impression that a lot of immigrant doctors are involved in this abusive practice. A comment by an attorney in the Las Vegas Sun on Nov. 1, dutifully reported by Allen, demeans the immigrant doctors and implies that the series of articles have created a negative impression of immigrant doctors. The quote serves no useful purpose, except to expose the attorney's own ignorance and bigotry.
