Normally, lateral moves aren't considered a good thing.
They still aren't at Millsaps College.
But Trinity University, a small liberal arts school overlooking downtown San Antonio has secured a place in college football history thanks to the mother of all lateral moves. It occurred on the final play of a Division III game played in front of fewer than 4,000 spectators last Saturday in Jackson, Miss.
Seemingly everybody wearing a Trinity uniform and associated with the school, with the exception of the student managers and the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, touched the ball on a wacky play that featured 15 laterals.
By contrast, there were only five laterals on the last play of Cal's 25-20 victory against Stanford in 1982, the fantastic finish against which Trinity's will always be judged.
Even if the Millsaps band didn't run onto the field.
