Rep. Jon Porter sees it - and he didn't nominate Dan Bog- den as U.S. attorney. Rep. Shelley Berkley sees it - but she can be dismissed as a partisan. And now even independent-minded Republicans such as Chuck Hagel see it - although his potential presidential ambitions may have played a role. But if those three - and others - can call for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign, why can't Sen. John Ensign, who chose Bogden and who has been snubbed by the administration, see it? And now we learn through one of former AG John Ashcroft's deputies that Gonzales, as White House counsel, tried to exploit Ashcroft's ill health to try to override a Justice Department directive on wiretaps. What more does Ensign need?
