Letter: Veterans deserve better treatment
Sunday, May 13, 2007 | 7:03 a.m.
I read with disgust the Sun's May 8 article, "Veterans stranded, VA accused of not paying fare." These individuals, who sacrificed all for this country, now find themselves at the mercy of the bureaucratic mess called Washington. The continual shoddy, neglectful treatment of our service personnel, past and present, makes us a pathetic example of how a nation cares for its own.
These selfless individuals, who were, and still are, called upon to serve this nation and who never asked for the maladies befallen them, are shunned and used as pawns in a perverted game of one-upsmanship.
We certainly have never had trouble finding money to support the conflicts we were in. The lack of support rendered these heroes in times of need clearly shows the worst side of America.
As a veteran, I am grateful that when asked to serve I was able to, and I am ever more grateful that I have never needed this nation to assist me if I were ever to have an hour of need!
