DRY SPELL, BEHIND THE SCENES
Nevada turns Colorado River warfare on its ear, by giving thirsty rival states an out
Jack Sheehan on the folly of asserting absolute certainty in an uncertain world
Regarding our own wonderful city, here are some things that this oft-humbled and wizened observer would consider to be Highly Likely.
Jeff Simpson proposes a compromise to Gibbons' transportation plan that might make everyone happy
Folks I've talked to, including people who served on the commission that identified the state's transportation needs, say those needs are now well above $4 billion and may be closer to $6 billion or $7 billion.
Letter: Iraqi freedom starts with families here
Our government is spending trillions of dollars on so-called Iraqi "freedom." Here is a case where we could start that "freedom" on a much smaller scale.
Jon Ralston writes the script for what would be said in Carson City if the capital was injected with truth serum
With the blizzard of numbers raising the specter of a snow job and the political intrigue enough to perplex Tom Clancy, perhaps we should imagine the unimaginable: What if there were unvarnished honesty in Carson City?

Editorial: Take off the kid gloves
As reported by Steve Kanigher in last week's Las Vegas Sun, Bethea, who was fighting on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya fight, had a CT scan done in the arena.
Letter: Private ownership is no excuse to flout law
He states, "The government has no business regulating activities like smoking in privately owned bars and taverns " Businesses may be privately owned, but they become public places when they open for business, and therefore are required to follow the law, whether or not they are in agreement with it. Civil disobedience is breaking the law, regardless of how they try to justify it.

Gov. Jim Gibbons scored big last week, in the opinion of many here, with a proposal to build roads to ease the state's increasingly congested traffic, without raising taxes.
Editorial: Petition a last resort

FLASHPOINT for May 13, 2007
In a state that is so red, the Republicans are trying every- thing they can to help the Democrats. Gov. Jim Gibbons sparks little enthusiasm with his 30 percent approval rating. The GOP dithered before moving the presidential caucus up to Jan. 19, when the Democrats are having theirs. The party seemed to be getting on track when it elected Sue Lowden as chairwoman. But Lowden got involved in lobbying against the gaming industry on Gibbons' roads plan, which could hurt fundraising. And now Sandra Tiffany, who pleaded guilty to ethics violations after losing a reelection race for state Senate, ...
Letter: Veterans deserve better treatment
These selfless individuals, who were, and still are, called upon to serve this nation and who never asked for the maladies befallen them, are shunned and used as pawns in a perverted game of one-upsmanship.
