Letter: Winners, losers clear in cost of gasoline

As we approach Memorial Day, we see gasoline prices increase to $3.19 per gallon. As with last year at this same time, gas prices were at $3.18 per gallon here in Clark County. Isn't it interesting that just before Memorial Day, gas prices increase and stay that way all summer. And just after Labor Day, gas prices decrease. Is there some form of pattern during these periods?

Oil companies can't say they're spending billions on new oil refineries, because they haven't built a new one in more than 30 years. With record profits of more than $39 billion last year for Exxon Mobil, it's plain to see we are getting it put to us.

We've been hearing for more than 40 years that we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and have not made any sincere attempts to do it, and why would the oil companies do it with profits this big and no greater expenditures to speak of? It's status quo.
