Sun photographer snaps a winner

Sun photographer Tiffany Brown has won first place in the feature photography category in the Best of the West journalism contest, an annual competition that this year generated submissions from more than 120 newspapers in 13 Western states.

Brown's photograph, "A mother's anguish," showed a woman collapsed in exhaustion on her Las Vegas hotel bed after searching fruitlessly for her missing adult daughter. The frozen moment in time told much about the larger story, a judge remarked. "The mother's body language and expression of utter exhaustion and despair carry the photo."

Brown beat 133 other entries in the feature photography category.

The awards are sponsored by First Amendment Funding Inc., an Arizona nonprofit group that rewards journalism excellence and promotes freedom of information.
