Letter: Taxes from South should stay in South
Wednesday, May 2, 2007 | 7:15 a.m.
The reason why the state, especially Clark County, is suffering with traffic congestion, a poor educational system and a slew of other problems is simple: a population boom in Las Vegas and a state too backward to get it.
The biggest detriment to Clark County is Northern Nevada. Yes, the state is divided, we always have been and we always will be. Remember, state Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio and other Northerners like it that way.
Southern Nevada has been subsidizing education and infrastructure in the North for way too many years. The South provides more than 70 percent of the state revenue . Mining, which is so dear to the rurals, barely pays taxes and employs even less, despite the fact gold and silver bring in a handsome profit to all the foreign companies that own the mines.
Southern Nevada needs to wake up and seriously challenge the power monopoly of the North. Let's take back our taxes and reinvest it in our community: Las Vegas!
