Letter: Carter’s compassion should be applauded

The commentary by Dan K. Thomasson ("Blame Carter for the mess in the Middle East," March 28) has every right to be published by anyone who will print it.

However, I radically dissent from his conclusions and general tone regarding our former president, particularly regarding his allowing the former shah of Iran to obtain medical care in the United States.

Since Thomasson chose to highlight this fact, I choose to take umbrage with his choice. President Carter was perhaps not the most effective president, but most assuredly he was the most humane and caring of humanity and where it is going! To blame his act of compassion for the Iranians' hatred for the U.S. is a step too far!

I know the shah was a tyrant, but shall we then deny medical aid in our prisons to a murderer who possibly has a number of years of life (although undeserving), as Thomasson implies Carter should have done with the shah?
