Letter: Show some love for Rebels’ boxing team
Monday, March 26, 2007 | 7:18 a.m.
Now that the men's basketball team is out of the tournament, do you think it would be possible to acknowledge that UNLV also has a boxing team?
In the beginning of April, the UNLV boxing team will be defending the national championship title it won last year. Greg Murrell, my son, will be boxing for his third national championship title in three years. Many of the other young men on the team will also be fighting for a second or third championship belt. UNLV will be hosting the West Coast Regional Boxing Tournament from March 29-31 to set the teams for the National Championship Tournament, which will be held in Reno.
Where is the love, appreciation and T-shirts for this group of (national champion) athletes? Even a token mention would be appreciated at this point. They are, after all, as much representatives of UNLV and Las Vegas as their classmates on the basketball team are.
I ask the sports fans of Las Vegas to please come out and show your support for this UNLV team in the same spirit you did for the men's basketball team.
If Las Vegas is so desperate for a national championship, it should be willing to embrace the team that currently holds one. Or is boxing too violent and sinful a sport for Las Vegas to be associated with?
