Letter: President is up to his ears in scandals
Saturday, March 17, 2007 | 6:53 a.m.
The Bush administration is averaging one scandal and/or disgraceful situation per year. Let's observe the record.
The Abu Ghraib scandal: Numerous accounts of torture and prison abuse were exposed.
Katrina: One of the deadliest hurricanes in history causing catastrophic damage, leaving thousands of survivors to fend for themselves. Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael "heck of a job" Brown promised help was on the way. Too little, too late.
The Mark Foley scandal: Congressman Foley was e-mailing sexually explicit messages to congressional pages. Although there were early warnings of Foley's conduct, it was ignored.
Walter Reed scandal: Thanks to astute Washington Post reporters Dana Priest and Anne Hull, this national disgrace was uncovered. The gross mistreatment of our brave and courageous Iraq war veterans is difficult to absorb. The fact that this administration was not aware of the nightmare conditions at Building 18 is deplorable and shameful
The Patriot Act: There has been misuse and clear-cut abuse of the Patriot Act's authority to obtain personal records, according to an inspector general audit, resulting in an investigation by FBI Director Robert Mueller.
The most recent scandal: The firing of eight federal prosecutors: Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said "mistakes were made" and this was "not politically motivated." The misrepresentation to Congress would most certainly suggest otherwise.
What will it take for this administration to follow the rule of law? Enough is enough!
