Letter: No sense in staying aboard Iraq train wreck

Friday, March 16, 2007 | 6:56 a.m.

We've already spent more time in Iraq than we spent fighting World War II, but when the Democrats in Congress try to cap our efforts there, with a date for the withdrawal of our troops, congressional Republicans object.

Does anyone really think that the troop surge will succeed in ending the civil war that President Bush refuses to admit is happening? How long must we keep significant forces there? And will the Iraqis ever be able to take control of their country?

These are questions that President Bush and his Republican supporters in Congress refuse to address. Meanwhile, besides the troop surge, President Bush is asking for more than $100 billion to keep things going there. It has become a train wreck, and I don't think our military should be on board any longer than they have to.
