Down the home stretch

As the Mountain West Conference heads around the quarter pole and bears down on the homestretch at the Thomas & Mack Center starting today in the league tournament, some horses, er, teams are picking up steam.
Air Force has lost a few paces over the past month and looks like it will limp across the finish line. The Falcons, 0-7 lifetime in the conference tournament, look like they'll be pressed to break their maiden status.
A loss to Brigham Young in Provo sent Air Force into a tailspin, and it has lost six of its last 12 games. The horizontal roll threatens to plummet its Mountain West tourney record to 0-8.
We analyzed the tournament like an old-fashioned horse race. Two or three teams are hitting stride, one hopes for rain, and another needs Charlton Heston and a chariot. Only one jockey has won the grand prize, one already has been bucked from his ride and another has announced that this will be his last ride.
