Letter: No escaping fact of global warming
Sunday, March 4, 2007 | 7:32 a.m.
Scientists throughout the world have concluded that global warming is an indisputable fact.
Unfortunately, many in our country attempt to discredit such scientific reports as fiction. Some like Rush Limbaugh have promoted a false belief that climatic changes are not potentially damaging to the world ecosystems.
Likewise, the Bush administration has contributed to promoting an anti-science attitude in this country; it has done a great deal to try to discredit and create doubt about the seriousness of global warming reports of our scientific community.
Many Americans lacking fundamental understanding and knowledge of basic science and the processes of scientific investigation have fallen for false propaganda from political flimflam artists; they are led to believe global warming data as merely cyclic changes attributed to phenomena such as El Nino.
Others with religious zeal attribute climatic changes of increased hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, vast flooding, melting ice caps and glaciers as events forecast in the Book of Revelations; some regard these events as evidence the inevitable end days of the Earth outlined in the Bible are upon us.
Unless we are prepared to accept the factual basis of research of reputable scientists throughout the world, we can expect more political posturing and inaction. Continuing dramatic climatic changes will have profound effects on our lives, both in the near and distant future.
We must be prepared to do as much as possible to minimize the inevitable results of global disaster of uncontrolled climatic change. To do less will place a curse upon future generations.
