Letter: It takes more than words to support the troops

Sunday, March 4, 2007 | 7:32 a.m.

Take those yellow ribbons off your cars, please, the ones that instruct us to support our troops, and realize that the time for empty slogans is long past. They were always just code for supporting President Bush. We all know that.

By not fully funding the Veterans Affairs Department or investigating the health of our VA medical system before he started his war, President Bush has again shown he can't do anything right. Four long years later we have come full circle with yet another stain on our national honor caused by the shabby treatment of our wounded soldiers returning from war. Pick up your phone and call the White House. Give this guy an earful!

Recently, when President Bush was asked if he believed Iraq was in a state of civil war, he replied, "It's hard for me, you know, living in this beautiful White House, to give you a firsthand assessment."

I propose the man in the White House get out of his comfort zone and have a pajama party/sleepover in Building 18 at Walter Reed Army Hospital for one night, you know, the building where our wounded vets sleep with mold, rats and roaches. Send Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, too. Nothing like roaches dancing overhead to give you sweet dreams.
