Letter: Nonsmokers can also affect the bottom line

Friday, March 2, 2007 | 7:11 a.m.

In Ed Koch's March 1 story, "No smoking, wink, wink," the owner of Screwballs, George Gatchis, claims he has already had to lay off two workers and that slot revenue fell $4,000 to $5,000 per week since the smoking law went into effect Dec. 8.

But Gatchis also admits he doesn't really enforce the law, and in fact his smoking customers openly flout it.

So if he's losing money, but not enforcing the law, has it occurred to him that it might be his nonsmoking customers who have stopped patronizing his establishment? Might it be that his nonsmoking customers have found other bars to go to where the law is being enforced?
