Letter: National ID card takes freedom away
Thursday, March 1, 2007 | 7:09 a.m.
Regarding Roger Witcher's Feb. 27 letter, "National ID a good idea in principle":
Mr. Witcher's stance on privacy in this "computer and video-camera world" is naive. This is the sort of thinking that popularizes bumper sticker logic such as, "If you've done nothing wrong, then what have you got to hide?" Can he not see that a national ID card will tag and trace us all like cattle? When this government changes its mind as to what is wrong on a routine basis, I have plenty to hide.
Look around us. Cameras on street corners aren't freedom. Airport inspections aren't freedom. Everything pumped out of Washington, D.C., has a strategic, economic advantage. Read between the lines. We are all being suckered into one global plantation where all individual decisions will be a thing of the past.
As for such a card improving our security, that's like suggesting that the cattle are more safe from the slaughterhouse.
