Step 1: Close the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and transfer the alleged "enemy combatants" to federal prisons in the United States pending trials or transport them to their countries of origin.
Letter: Immigration bill needs some work
As the immigration bill now stands, it would punish small - business owners by holding them accountable for the hiring decisions made by their subcontractors. In effect, along with other U.S. employers who rely on subcontractors, America's homebuilders would be required to join a national posse charged with verifying the legal status of millions of workers they never hired in the first place and may have never met.

President Bush has promised to veto the overall $27.5 billion Interior and Environment Appropriations measure because it increases federal spending by $2 billion more than he has proposed. And while the House seeks to increase spending for fighting and preventing wildfires , such as by removing excess brush and other fuel, Bush wants to cut wildfire funding by $96 million.

Congress hears from other side on illegals
WASHINGTON - The fruit baskets from migrant farm workers started arriving first in the Senate offices. Then today, bouquets of American flags are scheduled for delivery, each Old Glory representing thousands of illegal immigrants. Always, the phone calls, e-mails and faxes stream in.

Letter: Let's not stifle our newspapers
Would they rather stifle the fact that two newspapers, each with opposite views and the publication of different selection of events, keep us aware of local, state and world happenings? Perhaps they would rather live in a society in which the government controls the content of the media?
