Letter: Bush wrong on stem cell research
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 | 7:07 a.m.
Once again, President Bush continues his stubborn resistance to the development of embryonic stem cell research with a veto. The world's most eminent scientists involved in this research agree that this method is the nearest to eradicating some of this world's worst diseases.
No words can accurately describe the horrific symptoms that accompany them - specifically, Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's, muscular dystrophy, diabetes and AIDS to mention a few. These diseases manifest themselves with unbearable pain , disfigurement, mental incapacitation and amputation - life wasting away.
To date, these diseases, for the most part , are incurable . The suffering continues.
Fortunately, the president has been spared the agony of watching his loved ones suffering symptoms of these fatal maladies. His wife, daughters and parents have been spared to date , and all of us are thankful.
I'm certain that if Bush had an in-depth conversation with Nancy Reagan about her husband's slow and agonizing last years, it might offer the necessary insight as to the need for approval of stem cell research.
The most humane decision of his presidency would have been to approve federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
