Letter: Solve immigration by annexation of Mexico

Friday, June 22, 2007 | 9:14 a.m.

Illegal immigrants, guest workers, border fences and amnesty have been in the news ad nauseam.

What's all the fuss about? History gives us the logical answer to the immigration problem. Go back to the Mexican-American War that ended in 1848. The United States purchased (read stole) one-half of Mexico, an area larger than France and Germany combined.

The residents of the purchased lands - California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and western Colorado - automatically became U.S. citizens. And therein lies the obvious solution to our current immigration problems.

Invite Mexico to become our 51st state, with all Mexican citizens automatically becoming American citizens. Voila! Problem solved. No more need for border fences and border security. Wish Iraq were as easy.
