Letter: U.S. wrong to support Sunni insurgents
Friday, June 15, 2007 | 7:18 a.m.
The Las Vegas Sun's June 13 editorial, "Sleeping with the enemy," which critiques how the desperate U.S. military is taking a risk by using Sunni insurgents to fight al-Qaida in Iraq, would have been more aptly headlined , "Sleeping with (and getting screwed by) the enemy."
George W. Bush has engaged in plenty of rhetoric about a peaceful and democratic Mideast, but the de facto gangstering of the whole region is this administration's greatest blunder .
A gang/clan order that is rapidly replacing the century-old nation-state concept that had been meticulously crafted initially by Britain and France and recently by the U.S. will make it very difficult for the West to have easy access to the region's oil - the main reason we are there .
And as to our other most important strategic ally in the region, Israel, long before the last drop of oil is extracted, we will have as much interest and caring for our closest ally as we do for, say, Haiti or Mozambique.
