Letter: On hypocrisy, the liberal left and taxes
Wednesday, June 13, 2007 | 7:26 a.m.
Does anyone else see the humor and hypocrisy in Tom Harper's June 9 letter to the editor? He states that those with nothing substantive to say must resort to absolutisms, then proceeds to do exactly that by writing that the prosecution of the Iraq war is "totally flawed" and the attorney general is "wholly incompetent."
Mr. Harper took issue with a previous letter writer, Clarence Lanzrath, who said the "liberal left" has gained complete control of the Democratic Party. Perhaps what the earlier letter writer meant to say was that the liberal left has merely taken complete control of the Democratic Party's leaders, not the whole party.
It seems that the liberal left has taken complete control of Mr. Harper as well. If not, then surely he can admit that at least some part, some little part, of the prosecution of the Iraq war has gone right. Can't he?
I do agree with Mr. Harper that our country is debt-ridden. I hope he will join me in challenging our elected representatives to make do with the record level of revenue the government is taking in.
Those "tax breaks for the rich" were actually tax refunds, refunded in a proportional amount to those who overpaid their taxes in the first place. One could make a fair argument that the reason for that record level of revenue is at least partly a result of those "tax breaks." But fair arguments fall on deaf partisan ears.
