Letter: Let’s get real about funding shortfalls

Wednesday, June 13, 2007 | 7:26 a.m.

One need go no further than Ken Kuhner's June 8 letter, "Cutting pork would make budget work," to understand the thinking of the no-tax, no-time crowd. He writes about pork but identifies none.

He mentions that there are programs or endeavors that are "nice to have," but he is curiously mute about finding them. He doesn't suggest any realistic way of funding the $5 billion shortfall in road construction or the lack of adequate funds for education.

Sun Editor Brian Greenspun, in his June 3 column, presented a solution to these real problems, which Mr. Kuhner criticized. Mr. Kuhner is looking for upward of $5 billion under a microscope. Then again, Mr. Kuhner probably believes the microscope is a "nice to have" item and would replace it with a magnifying glass.

It is not the Sun that should change its realistic editorial policy, but it is Mr. Kuhner who should study elementary economics.
