FLASHPOINT for Jun 1 , 200-

In these days of cynicism toward those who work in govern- ment, how gratifying to be able to recognize a truly humble, passionate and dedicated public servant on the eve of his retirement. Las Vegas Fire Chief David Washington announced last week that he is leaving public service after 33 years in fire service. His last day will be Oct. 1. Washington became chief just under six years ago and all his superiors - elected and staff - surely will agree with these encomia. He once tried - and, alas, failed - to win a seat on the Clark County Commission, but that may have been a stroke of good fortune because it enabled him to reach his current position. Maybe he will consider an elective position again. He will be missed.
