Letter: Thousands dying in an unnecessary war

Sunday, June 10, 2007 | 7:03 a.m.

Men and women sit in clean, air-conditioned rooms in Washington, D.C., and decide who lives and dies in Iraq. Republican and Democratic politicians are at an impasse on when to bring back the troops from that civil war.

As I write this letter the fate has been sealed on many more service people who will be killed in the upcoming weeks in that bloodbath called: Bring democracy to people fighting a religious civil war. Is it possible the troops who are in Iraq still believe they're fighting terrorists and not fighting for the oil of Iraq?

Oil, civil war - does it matter what the reasons are when that hot steel enters your body? When this mess in Iraq is over and we're back to business as usual, will we all remember the lives that were lost? It will be the same as Vietnam. After all the killing there, here we are today, buddy-buddy with the very enemy that killed 55,000 young Americans.

Memorial Day comes and goes, flags are put on graves, and more and more young people die. I guess it's a good excuse to have a party and celebrate a day that many young soldiers will never get to celebrate themselves ever again.
