Letter: Praise Gibbons for keeping campaign promise
Sunday, June 10, 2007 | 7:03 a.m.
In response to your June 3 editorial headlined "The governor as roadblock," which condemns Gov. Jim Gibbons for standing by his campaign promise to oppose tax and fee increases at all costs, I have this to say:
First, he did make that promise, and it must have been what the voters wanted to hear because he was elected.
In spite of the pressures put on him by the Legislature, the press and every politician who had a hand out, he stuck by his promise. I commend him for it, rather than condemning him for it.
It is all too often that candidates make promises that they have no intention of keeping, and once elected they ignore the promises made.
If he had given in to the Legislature, press and other politicians, and gone back on that promise and allowed new taxes to be levied, would the editorial then have read: "Gibbons goes back on campaign promise"?
Also, people would then have regarded him like every other politician who speaks out of both sides of his mouth when saying things that people want to hear.
