Letter: Representatives should listen to us
Those 12-plus million currently here are on the verge of being legalized; the ramifications of that are mind-boggling. It doesn't matter how they spin it, it's amnesty, and I am against any efforts to dump this burden on all legal Americans.
Editorial: Another corruption case
Boggs is accused of living outside the commission district she represented and lying about it, as well as paying a nanny with campaign funds. This has been called an unprecedented prosecution in Southern Nevada because these types of actions usually had been viewed in cynical political circles as campaign ammunition and not worthy of a criminal complaint.
Letter: We should be focusing energy elsewhere
Our wrongfully directed and irrational response to 9/11 has shown average Americans how we're not the democracy we pretend to be - that we are, instead, very much an oligarchy with a rich and powerful ruling class whose corruption, self-interest, hunger for oil and desire for empire is now increasingly transparent to us and to much of the world.
Editorial: Bittersweet justice
As Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, Libby had the support of prominent people, including Donald Rumsfeld and Henry Kissinger. They had written to the judge, vouching for Libby's character and telling of his long and tireless public service.
More trouble on horizon for Boggs?
The state's criminal investigation into former Clark County Commissioner Lynette Boggs has widened to include the unusual circumstances surrounding her purchase of a high-priced automobile last year.
FLASHPOINT for Jun 06, 2007
Is it something in the water on Grand Central Parkway? With the arrest warrant issued for Lynette Boggs on four felony counts, the recent track record of county commissioners is looking worse and worse. Dario Herrera, Mary Kincaid and Lance Malone are felons. Erin Kenny soon may be in prison. Yvonne Atkinson Gates is being investigated by authorities. And now Boggs, having been accused of significantly lesser crimes than those who were convicted, still faces a stint behind bars. What is it they are drinking, how drunk were they with power and who will be next to take a swig ...
Editorial: An unfair advantage
A story by the Las Vegas Sun on Tuesday says that a report by the Boston-based National Consumer Law Center shows that people can pay their power bills at 21 Southern Nevada payday lenders, which issue high-interest, short-term loans to people who promise to pay the loans with future paychecks.

Jon Ralston explains why Session Lite will pack a hangover
This comes courtesy of a tastes great, less filling governor whose no-new-taxes brew goes down smoothly but really does nothing for you, and a Legislature that took only sips from the smooth but tasteless gubernatorial offering and refused to send anything back until Jim Gibbons served it something more palatable.

Letter: School District loses applicant in cracks
The single greatest difference in our experiences is that Ms. Winter gave up after only six months. I've been trying for the past two years. I am a veteran teacher with more than 30 years of experience, hold Nevada certification in English and physical education, earned a doctorate in education, have excellent evaluations from administrators and students and, like Ms. Winter, seem to have fallen off the School District's radar with regard to employment.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BEERS
There were few things by which to remember the panic-driven feeding frenzy known as the 2007 legislative session. Rare were the moments of statesmanship, flurries of words or speeches that reminded lawmakers of their idealistic youth and the reason they become involved in politics.
Pricey 'theme park' bill bobs up again, then is sunk
CARSON CITY - The so-called theme park bill, legislation written so broadly that casinos, theme parks, malls, car dealerships - whatever - could have set up business without paying state or local taxes, made a comeback late Monday.
