Letter: Republican Party tearing America asunder
Monday, June 4, 2007 | 7:07 a.m.
The insensibility and misrepresentation of President Bush and so many members of the Republican Party seems to call out for a new name. I suggest the "Disintegrating Party" for numerous reasons.
Casualties in Iraq are up 22 percent from the previous year. More than 1,000 of our military have been killed within this same year - 126 in May alone (an average of four per day). President Bush said at a press conference last month that this will be a bloody summer.
This president has put the Democratic Congress in a Catch-22 position due to his own admission that he would veto any bill presented to him with a deadline date for withdrawal. Thus, funds for our troops were extended to September without a withdrawal date. Now the second in command, Lt. General Ray Odierno, says we will need to extend the president's surge beyond the desired date of September to see if it is effective.
Meanwhile, the president says if you don't support the war, you are un-American. If you don't support the immigration bill, you hate America. Which brings me to Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C. Graham says if you don't support the immigration bill, you are a bigot. (This then refers to many members in the Senate, including Republicans, as bigots).
Last month Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said, "It was the policy of the Clinton administration to have regime change in Iraq. So in a way, George Bush carried out what Bill Clinton wanted to do and did not get the opportunity." This is hogwash fabrication in the biggest sense.
Both Giuliani and Vice President Dick Cheney have indicated that if the Democrats were in power, there would be another terrorist attack (i.e., 9/11). Let's see, if I remember correctly, did 9/11 not occur under the current Republican administration and under the leadership of a Republican mayor? You do the math.
It is as if the party has become venomous and spiteful with lack of concern for reality.
