Letter: Reid can’t spin away the harsh reality
Saturday, June 2, 2007 | 7:13 a.m.
Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's May 28 story "Reid sips weak tea - Senator defends compromise on Iraq war as progress, promises to retrench and fight anew":
Sen. Harry Reid can spin it all he wants, but he did blink when it came time to confront President Bush on the war in Iraq. "Weak tea" indeed. If he knew several weeks ago that he didn't have the votes to override a presidential veto, why did he continue with his tough talk and fiery rhetoric?
In the end the American public had a unique experience. Bush actually told us the truth? He had long maintained that the Democratic leadership in the Senate was simply engaging in political theater. How true.
But the tough-talking ex-boxer from Searchlight put on quite a performance, until it was time to declare "no mas." At least someone was punching back when Roberto Duran quit. I hate to date myself, but I long for the days of the real "Give 'Em Hell, Harry."
