Letter: How many abuses at King George’s hand?

Thursday, July 26, 2007 | 7:09 a.m.

Adam Cohen's July 24 column, "An American monarch," focuses on an out-of-control President Bush. When the Declaration of Independence was written in 1776, the rebellion against another King George began. The following excerpt from the Declaration establishes the conditions for a second revolution:

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security."

It isn't likely that our corrupt Congress will rei n in our King George, but perhaps we haven't suffered enough "abuses" as of yet and after 211 years we deserve an imperial presidency .
