Letter: Use eminent domain to fix up apartments

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's July 18 editorial "Renters sent packing":

Instead of uprooting 800 people and trying to find them other, affordable (for us taxpayers as well as them) housing, wouldn't it make more sense to use eminent domain to take control of the Buena Vista Springs Apartments?

The city (or county) needs to get a reasonable appraisal of the property, of course, and pay the present owners that amount, minus the monies already paid for repairs and upkeep that are determined to have been unused for those purposes.

Leave the renters where they are and, instead of sending our tax money off to Florida, use it and further subsidies to bring the apartments up to code.

Seems like a win-win situation to me (except, perhaps, for the absentee slumlords).
