Letter: President’s use of Almighty is selective

In David Brooks' July 18 column in the Las Vegas Sun, "Unconquerable faith," he reports that President Bush partly justifies his war in Iraq becausee, Bush says, "I do believe there is an Almighty, and I believe that a gift of that Almighty to all is freedom. And I will tell you that is a principle that no one can convince me that doesn't exist."

In our great country, we already have freedom, but under Bush we don't have affordable health care for all (my Almighty would certainly gift that to my fellow citizens). Instead, it is acknowledged that the health care industry is reaping great rewards and many soldiers are not getting the care that they need.

Under Bush, it is acknowledged that the gap between the rich and the poor has expanded greatly because of Bush's tax cuts (apparently they aren't trickling down) and many of the families of our soldiers live in poverty (my Almighty would care for all of his children, not just Bush's favorites).

I could go on.

The bottom line is that Bush uses his Almighty to keep us in a war where many of our fellow citizens are dying, being maimed and ending up being second, or lower, class citizens while overlooking many unmet needs here at home.

Why is it that Bush's Almighty is so one-dimensional?
