Letter: Bush respects, fears no one except Cheney

I so enjoyed David Brooks' July 18 column, "Unconquerable faith," on President Bush. I especially enjoyed it when he wrote, "... Bush remains energized by the power of the presidency. Some presidents complain about the limits of the office. But Bush, despite all the setbacks, retains a capacious view of the job and its possibilities."

Are the presidents who complained about the limits of the office the ones who viewed the Constitution as a valid document, and the U.S. Congress as a legitimate institution? Are those same complainers the ones who respected an independent judiciary and recognized the validity of verdicts handed down by citizens serving on juries?

Obviously President Bush doesn't see the job as being limited in terms of power. Why should he? He doesn't fear the law. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has taken care of that. Our president seems to fear only his vice president.

The ever insightful and always funny Molly Ivins, who died this year, wrote of Mr. Bush on Jan. 3, 2000: "I know what kind of governor this guy has been - and if you expect him to do for the nation what he has for Texas, we need to talk." How very true.
