Letter: Casinos don’t need room-tax subsidies

Wednesday, July 18, 2007 | 7:01 a.m.

Recently, I read about the room taxes that support the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Millions of tax dollars go to promote our city and its gaming properties.

The largest of these casinos have so much extra money they can afford to build in a communist country, which I am certain does nothing to help them advertise, but taxes them 35 percent on their gross profits. We have to stop subsidizing these properties because they certainly make enough money to advertise themselves.

Room taxes could be used in many areas other than making more money for those who already have so much. I know ending this largesse doesn't sit well with those who run our state.

Nevada is at the bottom of most social and educational measurements. Is it too much to ask that we begin spending on people instead of corporations?
