World Series of Poker

A glance at the World Series of Poker main event, which began July 6:

What: The 38th annual World Series of Poker main event, featuring no-limit Texas Hold 'em with a $10,000 buy-in.

Where: Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas.

Who: Entries totaled 6,358 players, including defending champion Jamie Gold.

Prize Money: About $59.8 million will be paid out. The winner gets $8.25 million. Last year, because of more entrants, 8,773, and without this year's flatter pay structure, the top prize was $12 million. Second place is worth $4.84 million and third gets $3.04 million. It will take a fifth-place finish to become a millionaire at $1.26 million. The worst finisher at the final table gets $525,934 for finishing ninth. The player who finished 621st overall claimed a $20,320 prize - twice the $10,000 buy-in. No. 622 went home with souvenirs.

Format: Because of the huge size, the field was split into four sections of more than 1,200 players each. Fields A and B were combined July 10 (C and D played July 11) and the surviving players joined in one room on July 13, playing each day until there were nine players left. Play each day ran from noon through about 2:30 a.m.

Final table: Nine players began at noon Tuesday and will play until a winner is determined.
