Tuesday, July 10, 2007 | 6:59 a.m.
A look at the committee that will evaluate proposals and make a recommendation to the Las Vegas City Council on a preferred developer of a new sports and entertainment arena:
Oscar Goodman
Title: Las Vegas mayor
Did you know ? His likeness has been featured on 11 bobblehead dolls.
Good sport? Embraced the NBA All-Star Game. Then again, so did most everybody else until "Pacman" Jones and his pals decided to "make it rain" at a local strip joint.
His biography said it: As chairman of the Las Vegas Centennial Committee, Oscar B. Goodman is known as the "Happiest Mayor in the World." He was elected the 19th mayor in June 1999 and began serving his second term in April 2003. Some say his unique character and quick wit are befitting a mayor in Sin City. Others say his irreverence and refusal to be politically correct are a refreshing change, but whatever you say about Goodman, no one can doubt the love he has for this community and his overwhelming desire to make it even better.
He said it: "I don't even know what hockey is."
Lawrence Weekly
Title: Clark County commissioner
Did you know ? Turned down a 16 percent pay raise, saying he had not been on the job long enough to merit it.
Good sport? Earned a degree in communications from Grambling, which has a good football team and a better marching band.
His biography said it: Lawrence Weekly is a native Nevadan who has spent the better part of 20 years working to address the needs of his community. He was first appointed to serve as councilman for Las Vegas' Ward 5 in 2001 and is widely known and respected for his commitment to community revitalization and redevelopment. Weekly has also served on the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, the Clark County Board of Health, the State Commission on Aging and is well known for his town hall meetings, many of which are conducted in Spanish.
He said it: "I'm an infant trying to learn how to walk. I'm not going to come in and run my mouth, be a showoff or anything like that. I'm not trying to change the world right away, but I am a person who has a familiarity with local government."
Pat Shalmy
Title: President, Nevada Power
Did you know ? As Chamber of Commerce president told Time magazine that if Oscar Goodman was elected mayor of Las Vegas , "the image we've been trying to improve over the years might be set back."
Good sport? Loves to hike.
His biography said it: Donald L. "Pat" Shalmy is president of Nevada Power. He joined the utility in May 2002 as senior vice president and was made president in July 2002. Before that, Shalmy was president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, the third-largest chamber in the United States, with 7,000 members and a staff of 60. Under his leadership from 1997-2001, the chamber was recognized as the most influential voice of business in Nevada.
He said it: "I strongly believe that private industry does things much better than the public sector because it removes the politics from it."
Lloyd George
Title: Senior U.S. District Court judge
Did you know ? Ruled in favor of two Mirage cocktail waitresses in their lawsuit claiming casino founder Steve Wynn criticized them for having "fat asses."
Good sport? Wouldn't be bothered by Charles Barkley 's big caboose.
His biography said it: Served as an Air Force pilot before receiving his law degree in 1961 from the University of California, Berkeley. Among his numerous achievements, he has been the recipient of the Jurist of the Year Award, the Liberty Bell Award for Public Service and the Brigham Young University Alumni Distinguished Service Award. In addition, he has served as former chairman of the State Apprentice Council and is former president of the Clark County Association for Retarded Children .
He said it: "The court cannot conclude that offering inducements such as room and food to a casino patron, with the intent to induce that patron to gamble, is conduct intolerable in a civilized society."
Tina Kunzer-Murphy
Title: Executive director, Las Vegas Bowl
Did you know ? Recently elected to Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame.
Good sport? Knows so much about them she could be a sideline reporter.
Her biography said it: Oversees the Las Vegas Bowl college football game, which for the past two years has attracted record crowds to Sam Boyd Stadium. Tina Kunzer-Murphy is one of just two women serving as executive director of a bowl game, preceding Missy Setters of the Independence Bowl. Before getting into the bowl business, Kunzer-Murphy was a UNLV athletic administrator and tennis coach.
She said it: "That's when you know you have arrived, when they're scalping tickets and they're selling them on eBay."
Rossi Ralenkotter
Title: President, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Did you know ? Served as a Nevada delegate to the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism in 1995.
Good sport? Virtually every major sporting event that comes to Las Vegas bears his fingerprints, signature or rubber stamp.
