Day 2 of the main event of the World Series of Poker

DAY: 2 (Officially known as Day 1B)

BIG NEWS: The field increased to an unofficial total of 2,833 players on the second of four starting days at the $10,000 buy-in World Series of Poker main event on Saturday. Organizers said Day 2 had 1,546 entrants, compared to 1,287 on Friday, and Sunday's pool looked to be even bigger. Still, the field looked unlikely to reach the record 8,773 of last year.

STUD OF THE DAY: Jane Gold, the mother of last year's main event winner, Jamie. After roughly four hours of play, Jane Gold was among the chip leaders at 42,000 after starting the day with 20,000. Jane Gold picked off a bluff by an opponent when an ace was on the board and she held pocket queens. She raked a pot worth about 5,000 in chips, then looked around for her son, who had been watching earlier. "Where's my baby to see this?" she said.

BUSTED OUT: Poker pros John Juanda, Aaron Kanter.

POKER TALK: Donkey: A player of little esteem who makes very dumb plays. Last year's seventh-place finisher, Douglas Kim, directed the insult at himself after pushing all-in with two pair, eights and fives, with a board of an eight, five, three and four. An opponent called with pocket threes, for a winning set, but a miracle five came on the river card, giving Kim a higher full house. Kim shouted out: "I'm a donkey! I'm a donkey! But I'll take it anyway!"

UP NEXT: On Sunday, the third of four starting groups will play 12 hours of poker to prepare for the second round.

HE SAID WHAT?: "He would play about how I've been playing so far." - "Simpsons" co-creator Sam Simon, when asked how Homer Simpson would play the World Series of Poker. Simon hammed it up for a camera crew by nearly jumping out of his seat when he peeked at his hole cards. Unfortunately he had pocket queens and had to play them, folding when an ace and king hit the flop and a player raised his bet.
