Letter: Commutation keeps truth locked up

Wednesday, July 4, 2007 | 1:04 a.m.

I ne ver thought I would support a call for the impeachment of a president after the farce that Congress put President Clinton through during his presidency, but now that George W. Bush has circumvented justice by commuting the sentence of "Scooter" Libby, I think our president should be tried for his actions.

Taking away the threat of jail time ensures that Libby will remain quiet about who ordered the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame, whose husband had debunked the false information that the president knowingly used to lead us into the ill-fated invasion of Iraq.

True, Libby was only following the orders of his bosses, Vice President Dick Cheney and the president, but Libby now avoids any pressure to tell the truth, and justice now cannot be served unless a full investigation is undertaken.

More than 3,500 young Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens have died because of the stupidity and recklessness of the president and his aides. It is time to make them accountable.
