Letter: Alternate fuel only viable if properly pursued

Tuesday, July 3, 2007 | 7:39 a.m.

In r esponse to a July 1 letter to the editor in the Sun written by Tom Keller, I must concur with the assessment that the roads and mass transit conditions in this country are in need of vast improvements. I must disagree on a couple of points, however.

Biofuels developed in Brazil made of cane sugar have lowered the cost of fuel there significantly over what the U.S. pays. The U.S. is not interested in pursuing alternate fuels in large part because the oil industry is not done raping the people yet.

The current administration saying it cares about gasoline prices is like chickens supporting Colonel Sanders. Alternate fuels are a viable option only if given the proper respect and funding the issue deserves.

As for petroleum products, don't believe a word of doomsayers professing the U.S. is almost out of oil. The tri-state area of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming has more than 1 trillion barrels of oil as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey .

That is enough oil to provide the U.S. with all it s needs for so long that, well, let's just say that with global warming thrown into the mix, I would question if humanity will still exist. The problem with getting all that oil is, in part, due to a point Mr. Keller originally made road conditions.

It costs a lot of money when you are transporting crude down narrow dirt roads at 10 mph. If the powers that be would put money into improving that region, our tax dollars would return several fold. Finally, and please excuse me but I just have to throw this in, it is said that things are bigger in Texas. Judging by the boondoggles that Bush has made, I would have to agree.
