Letter: Higher gas tax tough to take, but best option

Sunday, July 1, 2007 | 7:05 a.m.

It may be a bitter pill to swallow, but the June 29 commentary by Randy Salzman on the need for higher gas taxes was right on. No matter how loudly the media, the politicians and the public squeal, the only way to cause a major switch to more efficient transportation is a major price hike.

Alternate fuels do not have the energy efficiency and portability of gasoline and diesel fuel, and they will be limited in their availability and will cost more. And declining gasoline supplies will continue to push up prices.

Lower prices are just wishful thinking, so we might as well use taxes to limit consumption and provide mass transit and road improvements.
