Letter: Bush must recognize mess he’s gotten us in
Sunday, July 1, 2007 | 7:06 a.m.
On numerous occasions President Bush has indicated that his goal is to bring democracy to the Iraqi region. Just recently at the U.S, Naval War College, he said. "In places like Israel, terrorists have taken innocent human life for years in suicide attacks. The difference is that Israel is a functioning democracy, and it's not prevented from carrying out its responsibilities. And that's a good indicator of success that we're looking for in Iraq."
Wake up, Mr. President, and smell the coffee. Take a good look at the region. Clashes in Lebanon, Turkey lurking over Kurdistan, the Hamas/Fatah conflict in Palestine including the Gaza strip/Israel confrontation. The region is a mess.
You say the media only prints car bombings and the bad news. Well the fact that 329 of our military have died in the last three months is not good news. (Your administration says it stands to reason more will die because more have been deployed. This remark is deplorable and shameful).
The fact that 20 beheaded bodies were discovered in a Sunni Muslim Village on Um-al-Abeed, while at the same time a bombing in Baghdad killed another 22 is not good news. And the fact that it looks like the surge is not working is certainly not good news.
You declare progress and plead for patience and ask the public to give you more of a chance to create breathing room for Iraqi leaders.
You, Mr. President, sound like a broken record.
It is time for you to change course.
